The Philippine Labor Code consists of 7 books that detail how businesses should deal with their employees. It discusses working conditions, wages, and other relevant topics ensuring the protection of workers from possible mistreatments and given appropriate pay for the work they render.
Owning a business then entails that you familiarize yourself with these laws to ensure that your company is compliant and that it provides just treatment to your employees.
Now, there’s no need to read through the countless pages of the Code—we’ve already done the grunt work for you so you can focus on growing your business instead. Read on below to learn about what the law says on work hours and rest days.
Work-Life Balance
When you ask business owners why they started their businesses, most will say that they can better manage their time because of it—time spent on hobbies, personal growth, or families. In short, most people go to business for a better work-life balance. For them, owning a business makes this goal into reality.
Now, let’s go to the flip side: what about employees? Being at the office for 9 hours a day and traveling to work for 3 hours minimum, leaves little to no time to spend on other things.
Being an employee doesn’t have to come at the expense of having a work-life balance. Learning about this part of the Labor Code helps you be aware of the maximum working hours and minimum rest days mandated by the law and enforced by DOLE. More importantly, though, it puts you into the perspective of your employees so you can better identify how to help them get a better work-life balance just as you do.
